I sighed as my eyes fluttered open. It was still dark in my room, so I flipped over to look at the time. 3 am, and I shouldn't be up until seven. I looked up to see the window in my room slightly opened, but my entire body was drenched in sweat. I was breathing heavily and my nose hurt like hell. Realization hit me, I was sick. It all made sense, really. I was sniffling for the past two days, but I shrugged it off. In fact, I felt so sick, I didn't think I'd be able to go to school, which sucked, since classes were getting harder and harder every day. I grimaced at the thought, and curled up in my blankets to try my hardest to fall asleep.
***
A loud beeping sound woke me from my restless sleep, and I reached over to turn it off.
"Ugh what-" My words were interrupted by loud, whooping coughs.
"Fuck" I faintly whimpered, and reached over to grab my phone. After opening Kik, I went straight to my class's group chat.
"Hey guys. I'm not coming to school today since I'm sick as shit. If any of you could send me tomorrow's homework, that would be awesome." I quickly typed and hit send. My phone immediately received at least five 'get well soon's and 'ok's. I smiled. I was friends with almost everybody in my small class, and the fact that they cared made me a whole lot happier.
Another round of coughs.
But it sure didn't make me any less sicker.
I slowly got up from my bed, and started towards the door. Eyeing my emerald panda blanket as I walked, I ripped it off the bed and wrapped it around my shaking frame. I walked into the kitchen and opened the large cabinet where my family kept all of our medicine. Taking out a small bottle of nasal spray, I tilted my head back and sprayed it in both of my nostrils. After it somewhat settled in, I placed a Cough and Cold pill in my mouth and downed it with a glass of water. My cold felt insignificantly better, so I trudged into the living room and plopped down on the couch. Noticing my laptop sitting on the coffee table, I opened it and decided to go on Tumblr to kill some time.
Less than five minutes into my surfing, I heard three loud knocks on the front door. Great. Whoever was behind that door would have to witness a sick and pissed off me. I decided to ignore the knocks and proceed with Tumblr. Another three knocks. Ignored. Another three knocks. Ignored again. The third knocks made me lose it. I shut my laptop and to the door.
"This better be the fucking president because I do not have time for any-" I slammed the door open and widened my eyes. The male standing in front of me is the last person I expected at the moment. Ashen white hair, ghastly pale skin, and bright garnet eyes staring right at my miserable form. You guessed it. The one-and-only Gilbert Beilschmidt was standing right in my doorway. You could say we were pretty close friends, always hanging out with our 'group'. But I really didn't want anyone interfering with my process of getting better.
"What are you doing here? You should be at school." I glared daggers at the smiling male.
"I saw your message about you getting sick, so I decided to stay with you for the day." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Gil, do you not realize how hard school is getting? We have midterms in less than a month, you should be preparing." I exclaimed, crossing my arms.
"So? I'll just ask Toni or Francis to explain the lessons to us. I'm pretty sure we won't fail because of one day that we missed." He stated, "Plus you really look like you need someone to look after you right now." The albino glanced at me from top to bottom. I was still in my PJ's-  a neon coral sweater, gray sweatpants, and fuzzy rainbow socks, my (h/c) hair was matted, and my face was probably all red. However, I wasn't going to let him acknowledge that without a consequence.
"I do not need anyone to look after me! I'm not some child! I'm seventeen years old, Beilschmidt, I can take care of myself just fine!" I yelled and was about to slam the door shut, before he lifted up two plastic grocery bags.
"I brought ramen and aloe vera juice." He said innocently. Damn boy knew what he was doing, and exactly how to get me to let him in.
"Fine. But only because you brought my favorite food." I opened the door and the albino walked in. Taking his currant Vans and matching hoodie off, he placed the bags on the counter and walked into the kitchen. I carefully watched the German set the kettle on the stove, take out two bags of spicy ramen, place the brickets into porcelain white bowls, and sprinkle the flavoring on them.
"Spicy ramen will help the stuffy nose, but it's going to make your stomach hurt a little." He turned to me.
"You know a lot about ramen." I smiled in his direction.
"I'm not as dumb as you think." Gilbert ran his hand through his silvery hair.
"That's what I like to believe." I chuckled, and sat down on the couch, resuming to browse the web, "wanna go on Tumblr with me?" I looked up at the albino.
"Nah. Maybe after I finish the ramen." He turned off the kettle and poured boiling water in the bowls.
"Alright." I responded before breaking out in a coughing fit. Gilbert whipped his head in my direction and I narrowed my eyes at him. Without saying a word, he took the Cough and Cold medicine, and a glass of tap water and paced over to me.
"Take this." The male literally opened my mouth and placed the pill in it, proceeding to hand me the water which I drank reluctantly.
"Are you okay?" He asked worriedly, placing his hand on my shoulder.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." I looked up at him, a weak smile gracing my features,"This is what usually happens when people get sick, Gil."
The albino continued to look me over tensely, "Are you sure?"
"Yes. I'll be fine in a week or so." I assured him.
"Okay, but tell me immediately if something's bothering you." I nodded and exited out of Tumblr, "World of Tanks?" I asked, making a smile creep on Gilbert's face. One thing that we loved to the point of obsession was the online tankery game 'World of Tanks". We played it everywhere. At school, at home, on the weekends. We even got some of our friends to join in.
"You know it!" He fist pumped the air and turned to me.
"Bring the ramen, and I'll start up the game." I clicked on the gold and black icon, waiting for it to start up.
The albino soon came back with two bowls of steaming hot ramen as I logged in. I owned a SU-152, a tier seven Soviet tank destroyer, while Gilbert owned a VK 36. 01 H, a tier six German heavy tank. We usually platooned together, but for we only had one laptop, we decided to take turns.
***
"Where is this idiot going?! He's going to give away our position!" Gilbert screamed at the screen while I tried my best to focus on the game.
"Shut your mouth, Beilschmidt, he's going to lure the enemies right into our trap! I can't focus with you screaming in my ear!" I yelled back, and just as I suspected, two enemy tanks into my shooting range. Thankfully, they were low on health, so I was able to shoot them both down. The game lagged for a second, and the displayed a screen saying 'Victory'.
"Fuck yes!" We high fived each other, my blanket cocoon falling off my shoulders slightly.
"Up for another round, (nickname)?" Gilbert asked, scooting himself closer to my laptop. In all honesty this last game tired me out, and my eyes began to start wanting to close.
"Nah. I'm feeling kind of tired." I leaned against the back of the couch and pulled my knees to my chest. The albino's eyes widened for a moment, before realization hit him.
"Oh my god, I forgot! Of course you need to rest, you'll get better faster." He stood up, "I'll get you some pillows and a better blanket." The male walked into my room, and seemed to be gathering everything he can find. I giggled. He was tanking this whole thing a little too seriously, but it's not like I minded. I averted my (e/c) eyes to the albino as he walked back into the living room with a pile of bedding.
"That's an awful lot of pillows and blankets, Gil." I smiled as he arranged the entire pile on the couch.
"You need to get better as soon as possible, isn't that what you said?" He spoke as he fluffed up the last pillow. Finishing, he motioned to the pile.
"Yeah, but you're overreacting." I snarkily said as I laid down. Glistening ruby eyes looked down at me.
"Sleep, (name)." Gilbert pulled the blankets on top of my frame. After a double take, he kneeled down and kissed my forehead, a blush gracing his porcelain skin, a matching one becoming visible on my cheeks. I smiled blissfully and closed my eyes, turning on my side. I could hear quiet shuffling from my kitchen before falling asleep.
***
I opened my eyes to the dimly lit living room. Slowly getting up, I looked at the clock which read '6:40'. A delicious smell filled my lungs and I made my way into the kitchen. I flipped the light switch on, and as soon as I did, I heard a door open and footsteps coming in my direction. I turned around to see my mom walking in with a happy expression on her face.
"Sweetie, I see you're up! How are you feeling?" She hugged me, and I hugged back.
"I'm feeling fine, just woke up. What's this smell though? Did you cook something?" I asked, motioning in the stove's direction.
"No, actually. I came home early since you were sick, but apparently, Gilbert was already here. He told me that you said you were tired, and he was just taking care of things. I knew you were in good hands, so I didn't wake you up." My mother explained.
"Wow, so he cooked this?" I questioned, and breathed in the wonderful smell once more.
"Yes." My mom continued, "He's a nice young man, I think you two would look cute together." she laughed, while my face flushed a bright red.
"Don't say that! We're just friends!" I flailed my arms around, flustered.
"Whatever you say."She smiled brightly, "I'll leave you be since we all know you like your privacy when you're sick." My mom turned around and walked back into her room.
I gave a disapproving sigh, but continued on into the kitchen to find out the source of the amazing smell. I came upon a pot full of Sauerkraut, one of my favorite German soups. It was still steaming hot, so I took a bowl and placed some in it. I carefully covered the pot with its lid, grabbed a spoon out of its designated cabinet and walked back into the living room. Taking the bowl in my hands, I smiled. Maybe it really was nice to have someone look after you.
